Rangers could face points deduction after Old Firm incident – expert

Rangers could land a points deduction after a fan threw a bottle at Celtic star Matt O’Riley during their Old Firm clash on Sunday (7 April).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton suggested the fan in question could face a ban or the club could be handed a hefty sanction due to the bottle-thrower’s “ridiculous” antics during the 3-3 draw.

Celtic released a statement hitting out at the “appalling and completely unacceptable behaviour” of the Rangers crowd.

A Celtic spokesperson confirmed that a glass bottle was thrown at O’Riley, 23, after he bagged the Hoops’ second goal – a panenka penalty in the 34th minute.

Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy was also allegedly struck by coins in the dugout at Ibrox, with the police investigating the incident.

Hutton noted that such incidents “back up” the argument of restricting away fans at Old Firm clashes and was adamant that such behaviour will “hurt” clubs in the long term.

“It’s really going to affect the fans in the long run,” he told Football Insider.

“We talk about how it’s not the same atmosphere without both sets of fans.

“But these kinds of problems just back up the case to not have away fans.

“You need to be able to control yourself in these games.

“As I’ve said before, it’s a very emotional time.

“To be throwing things onto the pitch – you could injure someone really badly.

“Nobody wants to see that, it’s ridiculous.

“It’s only going to hurt your team in the long run and who knows if they’re going to get a ban or a points deduction or something – it could be anything.

“It’s something we really don’t want to see in football.”
