Paul Scholes has hit out at Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo for their training attire as he bemoaned the “standards” at Manchester United.

The young duo were pictured during a rainy session at their Carrington base with their hoods up. Both men have been among the leading performers for United in what has been a difficult campaign, Mainoo in particular as he earned himself England recognition.

Scholes, like Mainoo, was a product of the United academy but played in a very different era. The former midfielder insisted that no player can perform properly in training with a hood up and questioned the standards being demand at his old club.

He said on his Instagram story: “Don’t mind hats and gloves but no way can you train properly with your hood up… standards begin on the training pitch… bye!”

Scholes was still playing at the club when they won their last Premier League title, which was back in 2013 as Sir Alex Ferguson announced he was retiring. That remains the last time United ruled the English top flight and a number of their former players have had to watch the team’s decline.

Erik ten Hag’s side look unlikely to make next season’s Champions League, even though England could get five spots in next season’s competition. United look set to miss out on any silverware amid changes following the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe with the team in need of a major rejig.

“What we’re seeing is a million miles away from a team that should be challenging for the league,” Scholes told Premier League Productions in March. “Every single season it’s just so far away.”

After a defeat at Newcastle earlier this season Scholes bemoaned the manner in which the team conduct themselves. He said: “Rubbish. They’re a poor football team at this minute. Those results they’ve had recently are misleading. Too many lazy players on the football team – you can’t get away with that.”

Despite Scholes’ criticism Mainoo has come from nowhere to establish himself in the middle of the pitch, scoring impressively against Liverpool at the weekend. Garnacho meanwhile has had his most prolific season and he begins to become a regular in the front three.
